There are more types of fences than you think, you will need to choose the best one for your needs.
You likely want a fence for one of these reasons: Privacy from others, style or marking your boundaries. You will need to pick the right type to fit your needs, which could range from a visually appealing wooden fence to a durable metal fence. The material of the fence is one of the most important things to consider, as it affects not only the appearance but also the durability, maintenance needs, and cost.
Wooden fences are a very popular choice for their natural appearance and versatility. They can be customized to suit any garden style, from traditional to modern. There are different types of wood to choose from, including cedar, pine, and redwood. Wood can be painted, or it could be stained for a deeper, warmer and more traditional look. It is easy to install and very easy to work with, but it comes with downsides too.
Wood does require a higher amount of maintenance as it is easily affected by weather, pests and high quality wood can be expensive.
There are more choices though, one is a vinyl fence. Vinyl fences are a durable type of fence which do not need much maintenance, and is available in many more styles and colours. Vinyl can go with many natural styled gardens and gives great privacy, all while being easy to clean and resistant to weather and pests. Upfront it might possibly cost more than wood, but over time you will save money. Discolouring and cracking is common for vinyl so if your weather conditions are extreme, vinyl might not be fit for you.
If you primarily want a durable and secure fence, metal might be what you want. Metal fences can give a more modern look and be more secure, keeping intruders away. This type does not need much maintenance, but can be expensive and does not provide much privacy. Wrought iron and aluminum are two common options, where aluminum is easier to maintain while wrought iron is stronger.
A chain link fence is one of the cheapest types, commonly used for boundaries and pet containment. A chain link fence does not provide much privacy and does not look as good as a different type of fence, but is ideal for enclosing an open area in a public place.
Bamboo is a good choice though, as it is a natural option and grows fast. Bamboo can add a tropical style to your garden and will go very well with an overgrown style. It is affordable and lightweight so it will be easy to install and manage, but is far less durable than other options as it can rot or crack if not cared for properly.
You will next need to think about privacy. A tall fence, usually 6 feet or more in height is the best choice and wood or vinyl is a good option, giving a solid frame which blocks viewing from the outside. If you want security too, you will want it to be sturdy with features like a locking gate or spikes to prevent climbing. Metal fences will be the best as something like wrought iron has a strong and secure build.
If you are more concerned about the style of the fence, choose one that will complement your garden’s style. For a modern garden, you might want a metal or vinyl fence. If you require more of a traditional style, then a wooden or bamboo fence will look better.
Make sure to think about your weather conditions too, as wind, rain or heat can affect the durability of certain materials.
Wood requires regular maintenance, such as painting or staining to prevent rot and water damage.
Vinyl holds up very well, only needing to be occasionally cleaned with soap and water.
Wrought iron fences may need to be repainted every few years to prevent rust, but aluminum fences are almost maintenance-free.
Chain link is very low in maintenance, cleaning and repairs will be enough.
Bamboo needs to be treated regularly to avoid rot and damage from weather.
